News Unfit to Print – Week 23
by steve on Mar.16, 2010, under News UnFit To Print
Forty-six percent of the 1,014 adults surveyed March 4 to 7 described current U.S. environmental conditions as excellent or good.
Im not sure what this says more about Americans; either we are more complacent with our role in polluting the world, or we’re more gullible than I thought. A new study by Gallup says that people are starting to think that just because Wallmart is putting sod on the roof that everything they do inside is OK and that buyin a new SUV is green as long as it’s a hybrid. Possibly it could be the vivid stories out of every corner of the globe which show vivid large scale ecological devastation, and comparatively I guess some of the US is better than that and other less inhabited areas are being blown to bits.
You cant plug a hole in the dam with bubble gum and paint over it. Whether or not Global Warming was blown out of proportion by the UN and Al Gore for personal profit from the creation of multi billion dollar carbon trading markets I think its indisputable to say if humans have not YET damaged the ecosystem beyond repair – we will soon.
There are unprecedented levels of extinctions occurring just as we are learning about how interconnected the delicate web is. There are trash piles the size of Texas in the pacific ocean. 405 areas ranging from a square kilometer to 70,000 square kilometers in the Ocean have been so polluted by fertilizer agro run that it no longer can support life and is called a “Dead Ocean Zone”. These zones exist in almost every body of water on Earth and are new since 1970. It’s theorized that 90% of all large fish in the sea have been killed.

(Reuters) – Forty-six percent of the 1,014 adults surveyed March 4 to 7 described current U.S. environmental conditions as excellent or good. That was up from 39 percent in March 2009 and was the highest positive environmental rating measured by Gallup since 2002.
The percentage of Americans who say the environment is only fair to poor was down from 61 percent last year.
The year-on-year changes were within the polling data’s 4 percentage point margin of error.
Only 2 percent viewed the environment as the most important problem facing the United States today, while the number who expect it to become the main priority in 25 years slipped slightly to 11 percent.

Artist: Burzum
Record Label: Byelobog Productions
Release Date: March 8, 2010
______________________________
PLEASE NOTE: Translations from Norwegian for track titles can be found after the album review
______________________________
Synopsis: It has been fourteen long years since Burzum’s last black metal (bm) release, Filosofem. Belus is easily one of the most anticipated works in the last decade of the underground metal scene. Regardless of what you think about the man himself and his controversial, outspoken yet misunderstood worldly views, Varg Vikernes is a pioneer and has expressed distaste at the current state of affairs in a genre he helped create and put on the map. Album Title: Nifelvind
Artist: Finntroll
Record Label: Century Media (www.centurymedia.com)
Release Date: February 23, 2010
______________________________
Synopsis: This year looks to be an exciting year for bands releasing material, just as last year was. I have always been a sucker for Finntroll, so of course I was waiting for this album with anticipation (even though I was disappointed with their 2007 release, Ur Jordens Djup, mainly because of the downplayed Humppa element). News Unfit to Print – Week 23
by karl on Feb.15, 2010, under News UnFit To Print
Ever wonder whether your lights are being on is at the expense of a mountain? Chances are pretty good they are.
A new website aims to help illustrate this fact by showing the source of the your local power plant’s energy. In the northeast most of the power plants are coal fired and most of them get the bulk of their energy from mountain top removal mines. Knowing how you are directly contributing to the problem is the first step to understanding how you can minimize your impact.
I for one have a harder time leaving lights on in my apartment now that I know whos backyard is being destroyed by my inaction.

Sonic Assault – Fear Factory – Mechanize
by karl on Feb.10, 2010, under Music Reviews
Album Title: Mechanize
Artist: Fear Factory
Record Label: Candlelight Records (www.candlelighrecordsusa.com)
______________________________
Synopsis: This band is familiar to most people who have been a fan of the genre for the past 20 years or so, particularly in the ’90s. What would also be familiar to many people was the steady decline of their trademark sound and intensity after the release of their 3rd album, Obsolete, with many ensuing subpar offerings. Having greatly enjoyed their first three albums, I always retained the hope that Fear Factory would return to form, no matter how disillusioned I, as many others, were with their newer material. With all the drama surrounding the band, including recent legal disputes over the band’s name it seemed like the band would finally implode, tarnishing its initial brilliant legacy with disappointment (google “Fear Factory drama” to get up to speed).
